I got interested in psychology and psychotherapy from my father who was a psychologist and psychoanalyst. I later majored in psychology in college and worked as a nursing assistant in a psychiatric hospital before going to graduate school. I also completed my own psychotherapy.
I became fascinated with trying to understand why and how people avoid awareness of their own feelings and how that avoidance can lead to a host of difficulties in relationships, school, and work, robbing people of the capacity to enjoy life.
I learned that people can go a long way to resolving their problems by becoming aware of their feelings, thoughts, and attitudes and sharing them with a psychotherapist.
Training and credentials
I received my PhD in clinical psychology from The New School for Social Research in New York City and pursued extensive postdoctoral training in psychodynamic psychotherapy, psychoanalysis, integrative approaches, and the treatment of addictive disorders.
I am a professor emeritus and former tenured professor of psychology at the City University of New York, where I directed a doctoral program in clinical psychology and led the program in addiction studies. In these roles, I've trained and supervised numerous practicing psychologists who now serve clients throughout New York and beyond. This experience teaching advanced clinical techniques and guiding others in their therapeutic work has continually deepened my own approach to therapy.
Building on this foundation, my clinical practice has become the heart of my professional life. While I continue to engage in teaching, research, and scholarly publishing, I've chosen to focus primarily on working with adults facing complex psychological challenges. This intentional shift allows me to dedicate more attention to my clients while still drawing on my academic background to bring both deeply human understanding and evidence-based insights to each therapeutic relationship.
Awards and Fellowships
I am engaged in the fields of psychology and psychoanalysis and have received several honors and awards, including being the recipient of the prestigious Research and Scholarship Award from The Society for Psychoanalysis and Psychoanalytic Psychology of the American Psychological Association (APA) in 2015.
I am a Fellow in the APA Divisions of General Psychology, Clinical Psychology, Addictions, and Psychoanalysis and Psychoanalytic Psychology, and of the International Psychoanalytic Association.
